Alev and I were particularly interested in social behaviors of animals, and the non-verbal communication between members of flocks of birds led us to this luminary. Each hanging styrofoam shape contains within it four ceramic magnets. These magnets are strategically placed within the overall structure to repel each other. When one piece gets too close to its neighbor, it reacts to its magnet and immediately moves back into place. This particular assignment asked us to explore the design of small spaces, creating an 'eco-shelter' no larger than 400 sq. ft. We were to place it on campus, and I was immediately inspired by small grove of trees on a hill at the crook of a road. I decided to design a space that essentially brought back the childhood adventure associated with tree houses. The geometric shapes capture the angles of branches within the space, while the windows allow for light to enter as it would through those branches. After exploring the different forms of play that exist within the realm of social dancing, I came to the conclusion that what I enjoy most about it is its conversationality. Within the structured, but flexible frame-work of Lindy Hop, I can easily express myself without feeling completely vulnerable. What I wanted to replicate was that feeling of safety within creativity. Shadow Play | Shadow Dance’s adjustable screens and lighting set-up allows for players to create thin and layered degrees of separation between themselves and others. Minnesota || || March, 2014 || Catalyst week provides the opportunity experiment with design on a more exploratory level. Stimulus Package in particular involved the use of new technologically advanced materials. Our group in particular created Light Tag, a structure that used photoluminecent paint in conjunction with various other materials to create architecture that directly responds to its visitor, College || || January, 2011 || The final project of my Advanced Drawing Course involved creating a series, along with an artist's statement, and have it displayed somewhere on campus. This set was shown in Regents Hall of Science during Spring Semester of 2011. Artist's Statement: At times when I've felt the most inadequate, I've always wished for someone to remind me that there is a certain but unspoken value and worth present in the unexceptional. In science, it can be noted that all things, living or non, contain within them some sort of potential energy. Every single person, regardless of their appearance, talent, intelligence, or upbringing, emits energy from their body as long as they live. The unimportant things we encounter every day also emit or reflect light and energy. Although my feelings towards my upbringing are conflicted, the best way I can express this is through the stories I have logged throughout time.
